Curious, but cautious about AI
Tuesday February 25, 2025 10:15am - Wednesday February 26, 2025 4:15pm MST
I’m curious and excited about all the things that we can do with AI, but at the same time, I’m cautious about how we approach it. I’ve found lots of enthusiasm around AI at conferences and I want to share a slightly different perspective. Join me as I talk about some concerns around AI bias and ethics that I think should be considered as we are embracing AI. I’ll share some ideas (such as setting up an AI tool to act as a historical figure) and discuss some of the questions and considerations that we as humans need to be mindful of (such as whether or not asking AI to impersonate a dead individual who can’t consent is appropriate or not). Tom Mullaney shared some similar ideas at ISTE and his ideas have me approaching AI through a curious, but cautious lens.

5 Strategic Investigations for Compromised Google & Microsoft Accounts
Tuesday February 25, 2025 11:30am - 12:30pm MST
Do you know what is going on in your district’s Google Workspace and/or Microsoft 365 domain? Are you confident!? Investigations to audit your environment don’t have to be complicated or even take very long. In this session, we will break down the top areas requiring your attention to protect your district and your community. When was the last time you really looked into what Third Party Applications have access into your domain and what type of access they have? How quickly can you identify and eliminate VPN usage or explicit Apps that your students ARE accessing with their district accounts? Maintaining data security is a never-ending game of cat and mouse. You must identify the multitude of files being shared outside your domain and take necessary action to ensure they don’t contain sensitive information. It’s equally important to quickly detect patterns of concerning logins that could indicate a compromised account. Helping students with Dyslexia be successful in the digital classroom
Tuesday February 25, 2025 2:00pm - 3:00pm MST
As a student with Dyslexia, school was the worst! The constant struggle to fit in and keep my dyslexia a secret, my greatest fear. Feeling worthless for not knowing how to read or realizing what the words were that everyone else decoded and knew, it was a lot of work. In this session, we will dive into ways to help students with Dyslexia, and some forms of ADHD to excel in the classroom. Starting with the Strengths and weaknesses of people with Dyslexia (The Dyslexic Advantage). We will explore different digital tools that I have used in the classroom to help these amazing students realize their potential. These tools include: Posting simplified lists online (Canvas/ Google Classroom etc.) Giving examples of different notes with a tablet or doc cam Traditional or Doodle notes Media Visualizations Projects to think outside the box Read & Write Chrome Extension (most IEP students have access) Google Lens for read-aloud AI Applications for reading/summarizing And so much more The ISTE standard comes from the strand of Accessibility, Students with Dyslexia may feel like these things are out of reach but using the digital technology today students who struggle with reading and memorization have access in a way that I only dreamed about as a kid.

Crafting Summer Learning Conferences That Teachers Won’t Want to Miss
Tuesday February 25, 2025 3:15pm - 4:15pm MST
Are you tasked with planning a summer learning conference but worried about teacher attendance during their much-deserved break? In this session, you'll discover how to design a dynamic, engaging, and impactful conference that teachers will look forward to, even during the summer months. Learn strategies for creating sessions that captivate educators, addressing their needs, interests, and professional growth while also making the experience feel fun and rewarding. Since 2007, Weber School District has hosted a summer professional learning opportunity for its teachers—The Learn Conference. Through the years, the popularity of this event has continued to grow. What started as a small opportunity to learn about edtech in the summer for a handful of teachers has turned into a professional learning conference with 400+ participating teachers and administrators over 120 different learning sessions. We’ll explore creative ways to balance professional learning with elements that foster excitement and connection. Participants will also hear about strategies for generating support from key LEA stakeholders, finding the right people to volunteer time, and connecting with worthwhile keynote speakers. From unique session formats to integrating opportunities for networking, collaboration, and hands-on learning, you’ll leave with practical ideas to make your conference a must-attend event. We'll also discuss how to leverage technology and innovative presentation methods to keep teachers engaged and energized throughout the conference.

How to Solve the AI Plagiarism Problem: Process over Product
Wednesday February 26, 2025 10:15am - 10:45am MST
ChatGPT spawned the massive issue of \"AI plagiarism.\" Research shows 44% of secondary students are likely to use AI to do their schoolwork instead of doing it themselves. AI detectors fail to reliably catch this problem. What to do? Assess writing as a process, not just the paper! Scrible prevents AI plagiarism by making the entire writing process visible to teachers. It does for writing what we've always asked students to do in math - show your work. Come learn how this pedagogically sound approach - “process over product” - safeguards authentic learning and academic integrity.

Embrace our humanity in the face of AI
Wednesday February 26, 2025 10:15am - 11:15am MST
This is all about keeping the human in the AI loop. Yes, it’s fabulous that AI can save me time. It’s great that it can even craft emails or give me feedback to give to students, but where do we draw the line? Let’s talk about how we keep the human in the process as we work in an AI enhanced world. We’ll break into groups and discuss these questions and more: How much of the work should AI be used for? At what stages (brainstorming, editing, polishing, etc)? What decisions and tasks should be uniquely human? What constitutes cheating and how do we decide what is an appropriate use of AI and what isn’t? Who makes these decisions?

Paradigms of Possibility
Wednesday February 26, 2025 10:45am - 11:00am MST
Educators continue to feel the increasing challenges and pressures of our current education system. Unfortunately, this can at times lead any one of us - once inspired and hope filled - to feel burnt out, question our purpose and ability to impact those we strive to support, and overlook the opportunities right before us. There is another way. We can begin to shift our perspectives. Taking on paradigms of possibility can allow us to remain solution-oriented and see beyond the surface while staying true to ourselves and our students. We don’t need to ignore reality or simply accept toxic positivity, rather we can hold fast to ourselves, our values, and our reason for entering the profession while finding sustainable solutions and making the difference we held tight as we entered this important profession.

One Sheet to Rule Them All: Data Driven Districts
Wednesday February 26, 2025 2:00pm - 3:00pm MST
When I accepted the position as curriculum specialist 4 years ago, I wasn't aware of how much time I would spend digging through data from so many different sources. Whether I was looking at fancy premade reports or digging through a 214-column .csv file (cough...Acadience...cough), I felt the struggle of providing timely, relevant, and easily digestible data to my teachers in a fragmented environment where every data source looked and behaved so differently. In order to remedy this, I have created a system for aggregating all of our student assessment, attendance, and demographic data into one place--one sheet (or better, database) to rule them all. This allows me to access, sort, filter, and present the data in many different ways depending on need, and it means that as a district, we spend more time discussing the data and what it means than we do gathering it. Join me as I walk you through the process we went through as a district to create this database and present some strategies for dealing with massive amounts of data that I have learned over the last four years. If you are interested in the technical side of being a more data-driven school or district, this session is for you.

“A House Called Tomorrow”: Authentic Engagement and Belonging
Wednesday February 26, 2025 2:00pm - 3:00pm MST
During the last five years, educators have confronted a number of systemic challenges, including pandemic learning loss, accelerated adoption of educational technology, increased public scrutiny of educational programs, rising student absenteeism, and the emergence of artificial intelligence. Now more than ever, it’s vital for educators to set a clear vision for the future of education that centers systems for promoting authentic student engagement and belonging. As Alberto Ríos might say, together we “can build a house called tomorrow” by cultivating within our students a deeper sense of autonomy, a greater sense of empowerment, and a lasting belief in the power of learning.

Utah Microcredentials: Earning Credits, Endorsements, and APPEL Competencies Through Self-Directed Learning
Wednesday February 26, 2025 3:15pm - 4:15pm MST
This session will explain what Utah Microcredentials are, how to earn them, and why you want them. We’ll also highlight APPEL, Ed Tech Endorsement, and CTE Endorsement microcredentials. At the end of the session, we’ll help you start earning your first microcredential! Each Utah Microcredential is worth 0.5 USBE credits. Educators are self-directed learners who continually develop new skills and find innovative ways to improve their practice. The Utah Microcredentials System recognizes this and provides educators with an opportunity to earn USBE credits for this self-directed professional learning. Additionally, you can now use microcredentials to earn USBE teaching endorsements! APPEL teachers can also use microcredentials to fulfill their competencies! Utah educators can demonstrate these competencies with microcredentials as an alternative to taking courses. A microcredential, also known as a badge, is a digital form of certification. It represents an educator’s demonstration of effective and consistent use of the target skill or concept as a part of instructional practice. Any educator in Utah’s public education system can earn Utah Microcredentials, including classroom teachers, instructional coaches, counselors, administrators, etc. Earning a microcredential provides the educator with three things: visible recognition of demonstrated competency, leadership opportunities, and USBE credit.
