Curious, but cautious about AI
Tuesday February 25, 2025 10:15am - Wednesday February 26, 2025 4:15pm MST
I’m curious and excited about all the things that we can do with AI, but at the same time, I’m cautious about how we approach it. I’ve found lots of enthusiasm around AI at conferences and I want to share a slightly different perspective. Join me as I talk about some concerns around AI bias and ethics that I think should be considered as we are embracing AI. I’ll share some ideas (such as setting up an AI tool to act as a historical figure) and discuss some of the questions and considerations that we as humans need to be mindful of (such as whether or not asking AI to impersonate a dead individual who can’t consent is appropriate or not). Tom Mullaney shared some similar ideas at ISTE and his ideas have me approaching AI through a curious, but cautious lens.

Student-oriented ideas for using AI in your classroom
Tuesday February 25, 2025 1:15pm - 1:45pm MST
This session is aimed to provide secondary teachers with ten student-oriented ideas on how to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the classroom. By playing with different tools already used in Utah schools, such as Canva, Adobe products, but also ChatGPT (and its privacy-protected alternatives), we will discuss several practical ways how you can use AI in your secondary education classroom to increase student engagement. Whether you are a History teacher, using AI to allow students to time travel and interview historical figures, or you are a Science teacher looking for an AI science project, we would love to talk to you and share ideas during this session. Knowing how to navigate AI applications and gain the right AI-inspired skills is also very important for students to remain competitive in today’s job market. To that end, we will discuss the art of writing prompts as well as what some responsible and ethical ways are to use AI in the classroom.

Embrace our humanity in the face of AI
Wednesday February 26, 2025 10:15am - 11:15am MST
This is all about keeping the human in the AI loop. Yes, it’s fabulous that AI can save me time. It’s great that it can even craft emails or give me feedback to give to students, but where do we draw the line? Let’s talk about how we keep the human in the process as we work in an AI enhanced world. We’ll break into groups and discuss these questions and more: How much of the work should AI be used for? At what stages (brainstorming, editing, polishing, etc)? What decisions and tasks should be uniquely human? What constitutes cheating and how do we decide what is an appropriate use of AI and what isn’t? Who makes these decisions?
