Empowering Student Sensemaking: A Student-Driven Approach to Learning
Wednesday February 26, 2025 10:15am - 11:15am MST
In today's rapidly evolving educational landscape, we need to help students become invested in their learning experiences by making sense of complex information and applying their knowledge to real-world problems. This presentation will explore the transformative power of student-driven learning in fostering sensemaking across the science, math, and ELA classrooms. Drawing upon practical examples and research-based insights, we will delve into how student-centered strategies can empower learners to take ownership of their education, develop critical thinking skills, and construct meaningful understanding. By shifting the focus from teacher-directed instruction to student-centered inquiry, we can create a more engaging and effective learning environment. The presentation will highlight the role of technology in supporting student-driven learning. Tools such as Nearpod and Lucid can be leveraged to create interactive lessons, facilitate collaboration, and provide students with opportunities to visualize and communicate their ideas effectively. Through concrete examples and practical strategies, this presentation will equip educators with the tools and knowledge necessary to implement a student-driven approach in their classrooms. By fostering sensemaking skills, we can empower students to become lifelong learners and active contributors to society.

Paradigms of Possibility
Wednesday February 26, 2025 10:15am - 11:15am MST
Educators continue to feel the increasing challenges and pressures of our current education system. Unfortunately, this can at times lead any one of us - once inspired and hope filled - to feel burnt out, question our purpose and ability to impact those we strive to support, and overlook the opportunities right before us. There is another way. We can begin to shift our perspectives. Taking on paradigms of possibility can allow us to remain solution-oriented and see beyond the surface while staying true to ourselves and our students. We don’t need to ignore reality or simply accept toxic positivity, rather we can hold fast to ourselves, our values, and our reason for entering the profession while finding sustainable solutions and making the difference we held tight as we entered this important profession.

“A House Called Tomorrow”: Authentic Engagement and Belonging
Wednesday February 26, 2025 2:00pm - 3:00pm MST
During the last five years, educators have confronted a number of systemic challenges, including pandemic learning loss, accelerated adoption of educational technology, increased public scrutiny of educational programs, rising student absenteeism, and the emergence of artificial intelligence. Now more than ever, it’s vital for educators to set a clear vision for the future of education that centers systems for promoting authentic student engagement and belonging. As Alberto Ríos might say, together we “can build a house called tomorrow” by cultivating within our students a deeper sense of autonomy, a greater sense of empowerment, and a lasting belief in the power of learning.
